About this Program...
Assistive technology can provide both routine and customized access to the general curriculum for students with special needs. Assistive technology devices and services can also increase independence and promote greater participation in a student’s academic and social activities.

Assistive technology equipment and materials are available for loan to school personnel in the Region 17 area through the AT Lending Library.  This library is designed for the purpose of allowing schools to preview and "try before your district buys" assistive technology equipment being considered for student use.   Most equipment/material loans are limited to a six-week period.

Available services from the Region 17 ESC Assistive Technology Program:
  • Consulting assistance in helping local school districts match assistive technology to specific needs of students with disabilities
  • Training in the use of assistive technology for school personnel who work with students with disabilities, ages birth – 21 years
  • Loan of assistive technology to local schools for consideration/assessment purposes in order to determine student’s educational need
  • Training and information for parents, through and with the school districts, in the consideration, acquisition and use of assistive technology.
  • Interagency coordination and transition services for students needing assistive technology.

Universal Design
The term “universal design” is defined in section 3 of the Assistive Technology Act of 1998 (29 U.S.C. 3002). (IDEA ’04, §602.35) * UNIVERSAL DESIGN - The term “universal design” means a concept or philosophy for designing and delivering products and services that are usable by people with the widest possible range of functional capabilities, which include products and services that are directly usable (without requiring assistive technologies) and products and services that are made usable with assistive technologies.
