School Board Training Requirements

The following continuing education requirements are defined in SBOE rule Texas Administrative Code (TAC) §61.1 and Texas Government Code sections 551.005 and 552.012.  

 Type of Continuing Education 1st Year Board Members Experienced Board Members Provider
Local District Orientation 3 hrs within first 120 days Not Required Local District
Orientation to the Texas Education Code 3 hrs within first 120 days
Not Required Education Service Center
Update to the Texas Education Code Not Required Of sufficient length to address major changes Any Registered Provider
Evaluating & Improving Student Outcomes 3 hrs Every 2 yrs Any authorized provider, including LSG Coaches
Team-building Session and Assessment of Continuing Education Needs of the Board-Superintendent Team 3 hrs 3 hrs annually

Any registered provider

Additional Continuing Education, based on assessed need and Framework for School Board Development 10 hrs 5 hrs annually Any registered provider
Open Meetings Training 1 hr within first 90 days   Attorney General's Office or other approved provider
Public Information Act Training Check local district policy for board requirements
